Cao Shuyi (b. 1990, Guangzhou; lives and works in New York, USA) earned a Bachelor of Laws (2013) and a Master of Public Management (2016) from Fudan University, and an MFA from Parsons School of Design (2018). She currently serves as Visiting Assistant Professor at Pratt Institute, and has held residencies at Guangdong Times Museum, New Museum’s NEW INC (New York), Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity (Canada), Power Station of Art (Shanghai), Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, among others. Her practice combines sculpture, installation, video, and writing, taking the form of speculative archaeology and ecological science fiction to explore the alchemy of creation and knowledge, and the pluralistic relationships among technology, myth, and cosmology; through multi-media narratives traversing geological and microscopic scales, she meditates on cross-species kinship, diasporic matter, and non-human planetary poetics. Her multi-media installations integrate inorganic and organic materials, natural and artificial processes, joining hand-sculpting with digital technology, video, and sound to embody a heterogeneous recomposition of material temporality; her methodology merges multi-dimensional space-time and material transformation, including mixed-media sculptures fabricated from site-specific geological and biological elements, combined with virtual landscapes and fossils constructed through digital tools. Recent institutional exhibitions include the duo exhibition “Undersea Flame” at UCCA Ceramic Art Museum (2026), the duo exhibition “嬑形陌客” (Yì Xíng Mò Kè) at Para Site, Hong Kong (2023), and group exhibitions at Orange County Museum of Art, California (2025), the 11th Quebec National Biennial of Contemporary Sculpture (2024), He Art Museum, Foshan (2023), Aranya Art Center, Beidaihe (2023), Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing (2023), Ming Contemporary Art Museum, Shanghai (2021), Today Art Museum, Beijing (2021), and New York Foundation for the Arts (2021), among others.

Based on the artist's profile, Cao Shuyi works at the intersection of sculpture, installation, video, and writing. Her practice is defined by a speculative-archaeological and eco-sci-fi approach that investigates the alchemy of matter and knowledge, as well as the plural relations between technology, mythology, and cosmology. She combines hand-built ceramic and composite-material sculptures with digital imaging and sound, often incorporating site-specific geological or biological elements. Her visual language fuses the organic and the inorganic, the ancient and the futuristic, collapsing deep time and planetary scales into intimate, tactile forms.
Representative works include:
- *Tower Shrine* (2025, glazed purple sand clay)
- *Snake Armor* (2025, glazed purple sand clay)
- *Tooth Spike No.8* (2023, stoneware with apatite)
- *Ridge #6* (2023, stoneware with apatite)
- *Ridge #4, 5* (2023, stoneware with apatite)
These pieces embody her ongoing exploration of cross-species kinship, material temporality, and non-human poetics. Through a multimedia narrative that traverses geological and microscopic dimensions, Cao constructs heterogenous recompositions of material memory, turning clay, mineral inclusions, and digital fantasy into a meditation on life, ecology, and deep time.
