Ding Liren was born in Haimen Town, Taizhou, Zhejiang Province in 1930. He started learning painting at the age of six and studied at Nanjing University, Shandong University, and the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He is currently a professor at the College of Design and Art, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, and concurrently a member of the China Folk Arts and Crafts Committee, the Shanghai Folk Literature and Art Association, the China Folk Paper-cut Research Association, and the Shangshao Plastic Arts Research Association He showed a talent for painting from a young age, held unique insights into art, and persisted in his artistic pursuits throughout his life. He had a deep interest in Chinese jade artifacts of the Three Dynasties (Xia, Shang, and Zhou), stone carvings of the Qin and Han dynasties, modern woodblock New Year prints, paper-cuts, as well as African and Eskimo art. He advocated that art should be full of vitality and believed that “hybridization” was the only way to rejuvenate art. Liu Haisu called him a painter of highly varied styles, while Zao Wou-Ki regarded his art as a concentrated development of both Chinese and foreign traditional art. His works are in the collections of the National Art Museum of China, the China Academy of Art, Zhongnanhai, the Zhejiang Cultural Hall, the Jiangsu Provincial Art Museum, Hong Kong First College (香港大一学院), the Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau, S.G Gallery in Singapore, Asanuma Gallery in Japan, the Shanghai Liu Haisu Art Museum, and other institutions as well as private collections at home and abroad. He has published *A Collection of Masterpieces by Renowned Chinese Painters – Ding Liren*.

Ding Liren’s representative works include pieces like *The Big Squirrel* (2023), *Chalk* (2025), *Untitled* (2025), *Supermodel Iman* (2024), *Somersault Cloud Out of Battery* (2024), *Mermaid Ariel* (2024), and his *Leg Series* (2023–2024). These works showcase his playful use of unconventional materials — for example, repurposed clothing, branches, hot glue, acrylic on wood, and even de-glued gouache — often assembled into whimsical, figurative sculptures and mixed-media paintings.
His creative style is defined by an uninhibited, eclectic approach that merges imagery, expressive figuration, and a strong decorative sensibility. Ding Liren refuses to be confined by a single medium, working across ink, paper, mixed media, and collage. Deeply influenced by ancient Chinese art (jade, Han stone carvings), folk traditions (woodblock prints, paper-cutting), as well as African and Inuit art, he advocates a kind of “hybrid” aesthetics as the path to rejuvenating art. This synthesis results in a constantly shifting, vital visual language that Liu Haisu once called “a painter of many styles,” and which Zao Wou-Ki recognized as a condensed evolution of both Chinese and foreign traditions.
