Dong Xiaochi, born in Shanghai in 1993, currently works and lives in London and Shanghai. He received a Bachelor’s degree from the Chinese Painting Department of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in 2015, a Master’s degree from the same department in 2018, and a Master’s degree in Painting from the Royal College of Art in 2023. Dong Xiaochi’s artistic practice is grounded in classical Chinese painting while exploring the experimental logic of contemporary painting, resulting in works that visually reconcile different aesthetic traditions. He draws inspiration from human-made landscapes at various scales—classical gardens, modern botanical gardens, and miniature enclosed ecosystems—investigating how different conceptions simulate, imitate, and compress nature. His practice primarily revolves around painting and mixed-media works on plane surfaces. By creating imagery rich in suggestions of light, humidity, and atmosphere, he aims to give form to contemporary visions of the natural world.

Dong Xiaochi’s creative style is rooted in classical Chinese painting while pushing into experimental contemporary practice, blending different aesthetic traditions. He is inspired by human-made landscapes of various scales—classical gardens, modern botanical gardens, and miniature vivariums—and explores how these constructs simulate, mimic, and compress nature. His works, primarily paintings and mixed‑media pieces, are marked by a delicate interplay of light, humidity, and atmosphere, giving form to today's images of nature.
Representative works include *Algae* (2024, ink, acrylic, pastel, akadama soil on linen), *Sunlight and Sea Wind at Dungeness* (2025, ink, akadama soil on linen), *The Eye of the Lover* (2025, ink, acrylic, pastel, akadama soil on board), and *Guagua 1* and *Guagua 4* (2025, ink, acrylic, pastel, akadama soil on linen). His consistent materials—ink, akadama soil, pastel, and tempera on linen or board—contribute to a serene, hazy, and atmospheric visual language that merges precision with emotion.
