Kang Haitao (b. 1976, Chongqing) graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2000 and began teaching in the Art Department of Mianyang Normal University the same year. He currently lives and works in Chengdu and Mianyang. Since 2000, he has continuously explored the “Night Scene” series of oil paintings, focusing on meticulous detail and depicting mostly familiar scenes and everyday objects from his surroundings, such as woods, doors, and simple houses. His works draw on the “accumulated ink” technique from traditional Chinese landscape painting, creating a tranquil, unfamiliar, and mysterious atmosphere.
While creating the “Night Scene” series, Kang Haitao also explores abstract painting. His abstract works start from a blank void, and the creative process is almost meditative, standing in opposition to the intensity of the “Night Scene” series. He confronts neither a predetermined visual object nor any psychological experience, nor even the imagery that appears on the canvas at some stage. Through a continuous process of affirmation and negation, he relies on intuition and spirituality to arrive at the final presentation. In his daily practice, the “Night Scene” and “Abstract” series proceed in parallel, complementing and interlocking with each other, achieving a wholeness of being.
Kang Haitao has participated in international exhibitions in Hong Kong, the United States, South Korea, the Czech Republic, Italy, and elsewhere. Important solo exhibitions include “Kang Haitao Solo Exhibition” at PIFO Gallery, Beijing in 2017. Group exhibitions include “Painting: Macro” at Guangdong Museum of Art in 2020, “Walking with History: The 80th Anniversary of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute (1840–2020)” at the Art Museum of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2020, “Evoking the Past in the Present: The Inaugural Exhibition of Long Museum (West Bund)” at Long Museum (West Bund) in 2014, and “Thirty Years of Chinese Contemporary Art: 1979–2009” at Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum in 2010. His works are collected by art institutions such as Long Museum, Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai Star Museum, Guangdong Museum of Art, Jilin Provincial Museum, Wuhan Art Museum, the Art Museum of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and the Italian National Tourism Board.
Kang Haitao has stated that his creative motivation stems from the beautiful experiences of walking and wandering at night in his early years. He believes that intuition is more complex, inclusive, and explosive than rational analysis. He does not assign explicit meaning to the images; instead, as a recorder, he uses an individual approach to contemplate the relationship between people and the world.

Kang Haitao (b. 1976, Chongqing) is known for balancing two distinct but complementary bodies of work: his meditative **abstract paintings** and the meticulously observed **“Night Scene” series**.
Most of these are executed in acrylic on cardboard.
**Creative Style**
- **“Night Scene” paintings**: Kang depicts quiet, everyday surroundings—trees, doors, simple buildings—drawn from familiar landscapes he encountered during nocturnal walks. He borrows the traditional Chinese “accumulated ink” (积墨) method, layering subdued tones to build a calm yet mysterious atmosphere where ordinary objects feel estranged and suspended in memory.
- **Abstract works**: In contrast, his abstracts begin from complete emptiness, approaching the canvas almost like a meditative ritual. Without referring to any visual object or pre‑existing image, he relies on intuition and a continuous process of affirmation and negation, arriving at compositions that emphasise spontaneity and spiritual clarity.
- **Philosophy**: Kang sees both series as integral to his practice, each completing the other. He considers intuition more nuanced and expansive than rational analysis, and describes himself as a recorder who observes the relationship between people and the world through an intensely personal lens.
His works are held by institutions including the Long Museum, Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, Guangdong Museum of Art, and the Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum.
