LIU Xiaohui was born in 1975 in Shandong, China. He graduated from the Mural Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1999 and received a master’s degree from the same department in 2010, where he currently teaches. His practice seeks the possibilities of painting in an unadorned, ordinary life, setting his own questions and immersing himself in the pictorial riddles and fields constituted by color, light, shape, composition, and intention. LIU Xiaohui concentrates on seeking exactness and the “real” within the repeated experience of painting, regarding the act of painting as both the construction of artistic experience and the dissolution of that experience by life; it is in the alternating generation and fusion of the two that the authentic meaning of painting becomes plainly manifest. In recent years, the repeated depiction and continuous erasure and covering of akin subjects have formed the core of his work, causing the image subject to become further blurred while the painting experience grows more precise.
