Masaru Shichinohe was born in 1959 in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, and graduated from the Department of Architecture, School of Art and Design at Musashino Art University in 1981. After three years of architectural practice, he turned to professional art creation. In his early years as a painter, although the Japanese art market still favored "superflat" and anime styles, Shichinohe remained steadfast, concentrating on a realist approach that gradually evolved into surrealism. In his world, atmospheric pressure hovers near zero: the boys and girls, glass-eyed rabbits, mechanical fixtures, celestial bodies, airships, and clocks forever fixed at twelve o’clock all exude a palpable silence. Even the trajectory of billiard balls is rendered suspended mid-air at distinct temporal points, evoking the multiple-exposure photographic experiments of Italian Futurist artists, and stirring ripples within the serene space Shichinohe creates. He currently lives and works in Tokyo. Important solo exhibitions include "Tokyo Whisper: Masaru Shichinohe" at Hive Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2018); "Illusion and Reality" at Hidden Hill Gallery, Tokyo (2017); "Black Violet Concert ~Dedicated to Masaru Shichinohe~" at Parabolica-bis, Tokyo (2013); "The Girl Records Everything" at Omega Algea, Tokyo (2012); "Violet Under the Moon" at Ping Art Space, Taipei (2010); "Little Lady" at Aoki Gallery, Tokyo (2009); "Dark-haired Cinderella" at Aoki Gallery, Tokyo (2007); "Platonic" at Aoki Gallery, Tokyo (2004); "Converging Parallel Lines" at Aoki Gallery, Tokyo (2002); "The Boy Without a 't'" at Aoki Gallery, Tokyo (2001); "Masaru Shichinohe Exhibition" at ArtWall, Tokyo (2000); and "A Ramble on Physics" at HB Gallery, Tokyo (1994). His works are held in the collections of the Long Museum in Shanghai and by prominent collectors in China and abroad.
