Pu Ying Wei (蒲英玮, b. 1989) is a Chinese conceptual artist whose practice critically engages with political imagery, historical narratives, and the complexity of contemporary Chinese identity. His creative style synthesizes the visual and ideological languages of socialist revolutionary art and early Chinese avant-garde movements, reinterpreting them into a distinctive, multidisciplinary system. He describes his approach as a "total mobilization of artistic thought," blurring the boundaries between painting, writing, design, curation, and public speech to examine how China’s past and present are constructed and perceived.
His representative works often combine historical symbols, typography, and layered materiality. Recent key pieces include:
- *Red Computer* (2025): oil on canvas, acrylic, silkscreen, paper collage, and ink on rice paper—a fusion of propaganda aesthetics with digital-age motifs.
- The *Intelligent Capital (Trend of Social Culture)* series (2025), comprising multiple color-coded variations (Bright Red, Purple Red, Gold Red, Cyan Red, Scarlet Red): works on canvas incorporating oil, acrylic, mineral pigments, silkscreen, ink, gold leaf, and rice paper—these interrogate the intersection of ideology, labor, and technology.
- *Easy Rider* (2026): oil, acrylic, mulberry paper, silkscreen, gold leaf, and graphite on canvas.
- The mythological triptych *Dong Jun*, *Xiang Jun / Xiang Furen*, *Dong Huang Tai Yi*, and *Yun Zhong Jun* (2023): mixed-media installations that draw on ancient Chinese poetry and ritual music.
His work is consistently marked by dense symbolic layering, the repurposing of ideological text and imagery, and a hybrid use of traditional and industrial materials, all aimed at unpacking the narratives that shape collective memory and cultural identity.
