Song Kun, born in Inner Mongolia in 1977, currently lives and works in Beijing. She graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, earning a bachelor’s degree in 2002 and a master’s degree in 2006, and has served as a visiting instructor in the No. 3 Studio of the Oil Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. The quality of transparency in her works derives from the Buddhist concept of the “Eastern Lapis Lazuli Pure Land,” alluding to the mutual causation of spirit and flesh; the mechanical parts and mechanised dislocations embedded in the body point to the contemporary human condition of being controlled by order and thus becoming cyborgised. Recently, she has developed the “Animist” series: a clan originating from an Eastern “Animist Pure Land,” each member assigned a code name, personality, appearance, and gear. Their prototypes merge elements from anime, Eastern mythology, religious statuary, cyberpunk, and biological entities, generating a series of hybrid-identity “Animist” figures.
