Wang Yi (b. August 17, 1984) lives and works in Shanghai, China. He received his BFA in Painting from the College of Fine Arts, Shanghai University, and his MFA in Painting from the New York Academy of Art. His practice centres on painting, with works often engaging travel, landscape, and inner imagery. Important solo exhibitions include “Feed Back” at the Paul Museum, Los Angeles (2010); “Beautiful Land” at Liang Project, Shanghai (2016); “Those Who Travel Far” at Liang Project, Shanghai and “Path” at Lingang Contemporary Art Museum (both 2019); “Distant Mountains” at Powerlong Museum, Shanghai (2020); and “Absent-minded” at Art Depot, Beijing (2021). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions, having been shortlisted for the John Moores Painting Prize (China) in 2012 and 2018, and shown work at the award exhibition of the 3rd Stars Art Festival (2012), the shortlisted exhibition of the 12th National Art Exhibition (2014), the Big Biennale (2015), the China Pavilion of the Dakar Biennale (2016), and the John Moores Painting Prize exhibition in Liverpool, UK (2018), among others. His artist residencies include Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (2007); Stiftung Insel Hombroich, Neuss, Germany (2015); and the John Moores Painting Prize residency in Liverpool (2018). He won the New Artist Award at the 3rd Stars Art Festival in 2012 and the 5th John Moores Painting Prize (China) in 2018. His works are held in the collections of the Paul Museum, Los Angeles and the Powerlong Museum, Shanghai.

Wang Yi’s practice is rooted in painting, blending representation with lyrical, dreamlike qualities.
