Xu Haidong is a Chinese contemporary artist. In 2023, his works were exhibited in the two-person exhibition “Swimming Fish and Flying Birds” at LCE GALLERY. According to the exhibition foreword, Xu Haidong regards artistic creation as an inner spiritual practice, and his works are portraits painted for his soul. By withdrawing his self-consciousness, he examines the flow of internal emotions from the perspective of a stranger, resulting in works that exhibit a deep and inward-oriented tendency. The process results in a surface dominated by white, with traces of other hues hidden in the texture like faint memories, suggesting an inner struggle and restraint. His works are deeply introspective, observing the flow of emotions with a detached, almost alien gaze. This approach is informed by his background in theatre; he consciously employs a “defamiliarisation effect” (Verfremdungseffekt) akin to epic theatre, creating a critical distance that turns personal disappointment into a path toward reconciliation with the world.
