Yang Dongying’s practice consistently merges abstract and conceptual vocabularies with a hands‑on engagement with materiality. His representative works fall into two broad groups:
- **Metal sculptural pieces** – such as *蓬莱* (2016, copper and iron with patina), *江山* (2021, iron with spray paint), *雪霁图* (2021, aluminium), *凤来栖* (2020, iron with spray paint), *山外* (2019, aluminium), and *园林三号* (2023, iron). These works often distill landscape or garden motifs into reductive, abstract forms, while the choice of metal – iron, aluminium, copper – foregrounds surface, texture, and the physical weight of the material.
- **Art micro‑jet prints** – a series from 2022 that includes *雷公* (Thunder God), *观世音* (Avalokiteshvara), *孙悟空* (Monkey King), *如来* (Tathāgata), and *哪吒* (Nezha). Here he re‑interprets traditional mythological figures through a contemporary, abstracted lens, using print media to explore iconic cultural symbols in a distilled, graphic manner.
His creative style is described as abstract, conceptual, and experimental, with a strong focus on materiality and abstract themes. Drawing on his background in visual communication and industrial design, Yang often works with mixed media, sculpture, and metal, transforming both natural and cultural references into stripped‑down, compositionally precise objects. The result is a body of work that negotiates the boundary between traditional Chinese imagery and modernist abstraction, always returning to the physical presence of the chosen materials.
