Yang Jian is a Chinese conceptual artist (b. 1982) known for an experimental, socially engaged practice that spans video, installation, photography, and mixed‑media painting. His work consistently interrogates themes of power, consumerism, globalization, and the urban landscape through a critical lens.
**Representative works** often combine unconventional materials with painterly gestures. Examples include:
- *156130* (2022) – acrylic on linen with fire hose
(Taming the Black Hole)* (2021) – acrylic on linen combined with plastic film, rubber, cement, gravel, wire, and fire hose
(Soil·Deer·High‑rise)* (2021) – acrylic on advertising canvas with transparent resin, soil, wood board, and iron wire
(Neutron Star Dust)* (2022) – acrylic on linen with fire hose
His recent works frequently incorporate fire hose as both a physical material and a charged symbol, often stretched like canvas or embedded into paintings. This quasi-industrial element, together with fragments of construction debris or natural matter, creates a tension between organic memory and imposed order—a hallmark of his approach.
**Creative style:** Yang Jian’s practice can be described as experimental and conceptually driven, rooted in social critique. He avoids a single medium, shifting fluidly between object-making, moving image, and photography to examine how systems of authority shape daily life. His works are often quiet yet unsettling, using found or humdrum materials to build layered metaphors about globalization, late‑capitalist spectacle, and the erasure of individual agency. In the painting‑sculpture hybrids of recent years, the physical weight of cement, rubber, or fire hose disrupts the pictorial surface, turning each piece into a site where materially fragile ideas confront brute structural force.
