Yang Xun, born in Chongqing in 1981, has loved painting and traditional Chinese art since childhood. He graduated from the Affiliated High School of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2001, and received his bachelor’s degree from the Oil Painting Department of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2005. He currently lives and works in Beijing. His painting is closely connected with tradition; gardens, opera figures, rockery stones, flowers, and bamboo frequently appear in his compositions, as he seeks to aesthetically revive a certain tradition. His works bear an aura that seems to transcend his age and era, and he is regarded as a representative of the younger generation of “New Oriental Aesthetics.” In 2008, his monograph and solo exhibition “Jing Meng” (Startled Dream) brought him widespread recognition. Since then, he has held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in important group exhibitions in China and abroad, such as the 2011 “Pure Views: Streams and Mountains without End” at the Chengdu Biennale and the 2010 “Reshaping History” invited exhibition at the Today Art Museum, among others; his works have also been published in academic journals such as *Harper’s Bazaar Art* and *Art Value*. In 2010, he became a winner of the BMW Young Artist Support Program. In 2012, he collaborated with BMW to stage the solo exhibition “Youyuan Jingmeng” (A Startled Dream in the Garden), and his works were collected by BMW. From 2012 to 2013, he engaged in a cross-border collaboration with the jewelry brand “Donggong Jewelry,” interpreting the beauty of jewelry through oil painting. Since 2010, he has been active in public welfare, taking part in charity auctions for the True Love Dream Charity Fund and the Ai You Charity Fund, among others.
Yang Xun (b. 1981) is known for a practice deeply rooted in traditional Chinese aesthetics, reimagined through contemporary oil painting. His representative works include the early, widely recognized *Startling Dream* (惊梦) series, as well as more recent series such as *Floating Life Like a Dream* (浮生若梦), *Chaos Universe* (混沌宇宙), *Flourishing Blossoms* (繁花), and *Jade Bones of Auspicious Clouds* (庆云骨). Recurring motifs in his work – gardens, opera figures, scholar’s rocks, flowers, and bamboo – reflect his commitment to reviving a certain classical sensibility. Stylistically, he is often positioned as a leading figure of a “New Oriental Aesthetics,” blending romantic and symbolic impulses with a meticulously rendered figurative language, and carrying an atmosphere that feels deliberately removed from his own generation and time.
