Born in 1980 in Old Town Jiading, Shanghai, Yang Yongliang studied Chinese painting since childhood. In the early 2000s, he graduated from Shanghai Institute of Design of China Academy of Art and started his experiments in multidisciplinary art. Yang currently lives and works in New York and Shanghai. Yang started experimenting with contemporary art in 2005, exploring the use of various mediums such as photography, painting, video, and installation. Yang’s digital Chinese landscapes have redefined traditional landscape paintings, featuring a massive amount of urban images reconstructed, and recomposed. Poetic and quaint as it appears to be when seen from a distance, it unfolds a fable of modern civilization if one takes a closer look. His works have been exhibited internationally and collected by public institutions worldwide, including Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the British Museum in London, Paris Museum of Modern Art and National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.

Yang Yongliang’s representative works include “江山小景图” (Little Scenery of Mountains and Rivers), “万壑松风图” (Wind in Pines Among a Myriad Valleys), “临流独坐图” (Sitting Alone by a Stream), “早春图” (Early Spring), as well as single-channel 4K video works such as “湖泊” (Lakes) and “瀑布” (Waterfalls). His practice uniquely merges digital technology with traditional Chinese landscape painting: he meticulously composites thousands of urban photographic fragments into compositions that at first glance read as classical ink-wash landscapes, yet up close reveal dense modern cityscapes. This approach creates a critical visual contrast between the natural world and rampant urbanization, exploring themes of globalization, consumerism, cultural identity, and ecological imbalance through a contemporary reimagining of Eastern aesthetics. His style sits at the intersection of experimental imagery, conceptual art, and traditional literati sensibility.
