Yao Peng (born 1984 in Jilin, China) is an experimental conceptual artist whose practice spans video, collage, photography, mixed-media installation, and – increasingly in recent years – oil on canvas. His creative style is profoundly shaped by a fascination with time and a persistent effort to construct a literary vision that cuts across the historical landscapes and contemporary coordinates covered by temporal layers. Introspective and restrained, his work frequently engages with themes of memory and time, death, identity, social commentary, and the body, often evoking a sense of elegiac narrative.
In his earlier career, Yao Peng built important sculptural and video-based installations. Notable solo exhibitions such as *Bestow Me an Idol* (Shanghai Duìzhào Art Space, 2014) and *For the Living and the Dead* (Beijing Now Gallery, 2013) established his reputation for poetic conceptualism. His work has been collected by the White Rabbit Gallery (Australia), the He Xiangning Art Museum, and Wang Huaxiang Art Museum.
Among his representative works, the recent oil-on-canvas series stand out: the **“Night” series** (*Night-1* through *Night-4*, 2022–2025), the **“Sunset” series** (*Sunset-1* to *Sunset-3*, 2022–2023), and the **“Empty Shot” series** (*Empty Shot-1* and *Empty Shot-2*, 2023). These paintings often feature dimly lit landscapes, solitary objects, or suggestive empty spaces saturated with a quiet, almost literary melancholy. Through subdued palettes and delicate brushwork, he transforms personal memory into a broader investigation of how history and individual experience intersect. Yao Peng’s style remains fundamentally conceptual – even when working in traditional painting media, he treats the canvas as a site where narrative, time, and emotion condense into a lingering visual poetics.
