Ye Henggui, born in 1962 in Anhui, graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1989 and currently works and lives in Beijing. He takes everyday “sights” as the subjects and content of his paintings; the numerous “things” under his brush are his contact with the world and moments of pause. In his paintings, these “things” know no hierarchy or primary–secondary distinction—they are equal and mutually accepting, dwelling within the picture with restraint and solemnity, standing pure and still, refusing any symbol or allegory, and turning the ordinary yet extraordinary thing into durational time. His works reveal the autonomy of things: things are no longer objects for still-life depiction or embellishments to grand themes, but rather legislate and declare for themselves in a low-key manner, orienting toward a “turn of things” within a contemporary horizon. Ye Henggui has held solo exhibitions including a 1996 solo exhibition at the Hong Kong Arts Centre; a 1998 solo exhibition at Beijing Shiji Yiyuan Gallery (世纪艺苑画廊); a 2000 solo exhibition at the Central Academy of Fine Arts Gallery (in the same year he participated in the exhibition of the equivalent education graduate class at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and received the Wang Jialian Oil Painting Award); a 2008 solo exhibition at Schoeni Art Gallery, Hong Kong; and solo exhibitions in 2012 and 2013 at Ate Gallery (阿特画廊), Beijing. Important group exhibitions include the 2nd Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition in 1994 (National Art Museum of China); Modern Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition in 1995 (Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Japan); the 1st Chinese Oil Painting Society Exhibition in 1996 (National Art Museum of China); the World Art Fair in 1997 (Singapore); the Central Academy of Fine Arts Graduate Class Graduation Exhibition in 2000 (CAFA Exhibition Hall); the 1st Chinese Contemporary Art Invitational Exhibition in 2001 (Military Museum of China); the Xirui Art Centre Contemporary Art Exhibition and “Focus on China” charity sale in 2003; the “Simplified” (简体) Hong Kong exhibition, the “Pavilion” (阁) contemporary art exhibition (Songzhuang Art Base), and the “Turning Hands into Clouds, Covering Hands into Rain” exhibition (TS1 Art Centre) in 2005; the China Contemporary Art Documenta in 2006 (China Millennium Monument); the 2nd China Contemporary Art Documenta in 2008 (Gehua Art Museum) and Hong Kong Art Walk (Schoeni Art Gallery); the 60th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China Contemporary Art Exhibition in 2009 (Beijing Hotel); and the China Contemporary Art Seven-Person Exhibition in 2011 (Dubai Art Centre, UAE).

Ye Henggui's representative works from recent years include a series of everyday objects painted in oil on canvas, such as *Little Yellow Duck* (2025), *Chair* (2026), *Still Life 1* (2025), *Toast Bread* (2025), *Cake* (2026), *Fruit* (2026, acrylic on canvas), and *Shoes* (2025). These pieces exemplify his ongoing engagement with mundane items.
His creative style is rooted in painting the ordinary things he encounters in daily life. Ye treats all depicted objects—whether a toy, a piece of bread, or a shoe—with equal seriousness and quiet dignity, devoid of hierarchy or symbolic overlay. The works reject allegory and allow the objects to assert their own presence, embodying what his biography describes as a "turn toward the autonomy of the object" within a contemporary context. Stylistically, his practice moves between expressive figuration, poetic imagery, and abstraction, consistently conveying themes of memory, time, life, and emotion through restrained, introspective compositions.
