Zhai Wenqing, born in 1998 in Dalian, currently lives and works in New York. She received her BFA in Painting from Pennsylvania State University in 2021 and her MFA from the Department of Painting and Printmaking at Yale University in 2026. During her studies, she was awarded the Yale University Carol Schlosberg Memorial Award for Excellence in Painting in 2026 and the Sanyu Scholarship for 2025–26.
Her practice explores how beliefs are subtly transmitted and acquired through everyday experience. Drawing from propaganda posters, sandbox props, and children’s book illustrations, she observes how information is simplified and filtered across different media and iterations, gradually becoming self-evident “facts.” She works in a gentle, intimate, and seemingly innocuous visual tradition, employing metaphor, humor, and ambiguous narratives to push the scene into an absurd and slightly unsettling space.
