For Wu, life and creation resemble an act of “water play”—a state of fluid rebellion against power structures, value systems, and sentimental conventions. His practice thrives on discovery and transformation—an energy awakened in childhood and never subdued. Navigating between spontaneity and control, the artist maintains intellectual mobility through processes of discovery, transformation, and recombination. Seemingly casual acts—painting Republic-era wood carvings, repairing Han–Tang porcelain with plaster, or studying Neolithic tool marks—reflect his deep engagement with historical craftsmanship. Offcuts, fragments, and discarded matter—often dismissed as useless or “mistaken” by others—find renewed vitality in his practice. He distills casually encountered objects into concise forms, assembling them temporarily and allowing them to shift and mutate. Within his practice, painting serves as a foundational shaping language: the wooden carts echo the compressed perspective of pictorial space, while figures and animals sketched directly onto branches emerge as if drawn into the material itself. He is equally drawn to modeling—working clay into quick, sketch-like gestures—and often lets these small sculptures evolve into elements that function like words: units that can be recombined into new sentences and renewed meanings. His collages unfold like unconscious dreaming, the printed text embedded in materials surfacing as if extracted from the subconscious. To read them is to decode a dream. Each time he accepts these new messages, the boundaries of his inner world expand once again.
