Wu Huaheng is a Chinese contemporary artist. The compositional forms in his works broadly draw on the simplified brushwork of traditional Chinese landscape and flower-and-bird painting, yet are rendered even more concise and conceptually charged. Through the treatment of ambiguous, seemingly landscape-derived or other shapes, he avoids slipping into abstraction while evoking associations with mountain-like forms and a sense of strength. The artist employs a hard-edge method that emphasizes contour lines, patiently applying layer after layer of thick paint, so that the blank and black areas of the picture form a stark contrast: paintings with less blank space feel more cramped, while those with more blank space appear vast, pallid, and desolate, making the black areas correspondingly more intense and weighty, and generating an overarching, pronounced feeling of being “unable to breathe.” In 2025, Wu Huaheng held the solo exhibition “Blank Black” at LCE GALLERY.
