In his early years he explored formal language through abstract painting, and in the 1990s he turned to Political Pop with his representative “Mao Zedong” series. He later returned to abstraction, merging Eastern philosophy with Western modernism. Hailed as the “Father of Chinese Abstract Painting,” he exerted a profound influence on the development of contemporary art in Shanghai.
