Yu Youhan (1943–2023), a pioneer of Chinese contemporary art, was born in Shanghai. He graduated from the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts in 1973. In his early years he explored formal language through abstract painting, and in the 1990s he turned to Political Pop with his representative “Mao Zedong” series. He later returned to abstraction, merging Eastern philosophy with Western modernism. Hailed as the “Father of Chinese Abstract Painting,” he exerted a profound influence on the development of contemporary art in Shanghai.
