XZ SPACE is pleased to present Yao Peng's solo exhibition “Dawn and Dusk”, from September
13 to October 26, 2025. This exhibition marks the artist's fifth solo show in China, primarily featuring recent paintings organised into three sections: “Memory is the images within one's mind”, “Box of Desires”, and “Dream”. Yao Peng continues his exploration of imagery. This time, he focuses on how to precisely capture the fleeting moment when inner energy transforms into outward manifestation. This energy can be as tiny as a flash of thought or as large as the expansion and collapse of galaxies, and ultimately returns to reality between the two poles. The artist began his artistic practice centered on visual language in 2011. In his early work, Yao Peng adopted the format of “stamps”—a medium traditionally associated with social propaganda—to deconstruct and reconstruct political and historical imagery. Within the miniature scale of the stamp format, he used painting as an entry point for artistic experimentation. Later, Yao Peng's practice continued to revolve around the reading of images, accompanied by varying evolutions in medium and presentation. The individual specimens appearing in the work—ranging from the typical to the marginalised, to those without clear identity—unfold like a detective novel, weaving a blend of fact and fiction around figures whose overall image remains blurred. Yao Peng is habitually particular about details. In this exhibition, he captures a kind of synaesthetic resonance within the fleeting moment of dynamic energy transformation, drawing from cosmic planets, urban desires, and micro-gestures. The relative motions of three celestial bodies in the universe, can be seen from the surface of the earth as sunrise and moonfall. This transition between darkness and light, in the artist's imagination, can give birth to infinite energy and possibilities. From the fission of a single cell, to the opening of eyes as one arrives in the world, to the first cry of "Mama" after birth...the box of desires opens with the vibrations of sound waves. Images, with the continuous advancement of tools, explosively assault our retinas, hyper-
stimulating our five senses at an accelerated pace. Yao Peng's paintings are not packed with explicit visual elements. They do not seek to satisfy a craving for saturated viewing; instead, they embody a sense of restraint. The audience does not immediately grasp all the information of the work; rather, the viewing initiates a process of mutual discovery, allowing viewers to imaginatively fill the emotional gaps left by the artist. The enlargement of body parts, the blurring of vast spatial scenes, and the re-concealment of certain images result in an absurd and metaphorical composition. The frame freezes at the instant before the event is about to happen and at the point where words are held back, which together with the suspended ending stretches the psychological tension. Between the light and dark, day and night, like an opened space-time channel, the dim light resembles a dream, seemingly real but unattainable. It can be seen from afar, yet it is impossible to truly reach, mysterious and chaotic.
